Where Did the Archduke Die?
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1914 it had around 110,000 inhabitants. Sarajevo is, and has historically been, the largest city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The current population of Bosnia is about 4.6 million but was only about 2 million at the start of 1914. Bosnia only has about 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) of coastline, and is bordered by Croatia to the north and west, Serbia to the east, and Montenegro to the south-east.
Sarajevo itself was founded by Isa-Beg Isakovic. In 1461, it was named Bosna-Saraj after being conquered by the Ottomans. The modern name, Sarajevo, is derived from the Turkish "Saraj Ovasi, meaning "the field around the palace." Sarajevo was ruled by the Ottomans for around 5 centuries. In 1878, Austria-Hungary acquired Bosnia, and by extension, Sarajevo. After World War 1, Bosnia became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, along with Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro. Josip Broz Tito lead liberators to free the city of Sarajevo from Nazi forces in 1945.
After Tito's death, Yugoslavia split up into different countries after years of war in the early 1990s. During 1992-1995 the Yugoslav Army and Serbian militias shelled and destroyed much of the city. It has since been rebuilt.
